The Mansion That Inspired The Film Gone With The Wind Up For Auction

Just outside of Atlanta is the antebellum mansion that reportedly served as the inspiration for the home in the iconic film, Gone With the Wind. The author, Margaret Mitchell, originally had no interest in the production of turning her book into a film until she saw a picture of the 1836 plantation-style house in the Atlanta Journal. Winning her over with charm, she claimed it was just as she imagined the Tara Plantation to be. Unfortunately, after about 1939, it fell into disrepair. However, it was lovingly restored in 2017 by the current owners. The stately white pillar-covered mansion features more than 10,000 square feet of renovated space — over $2 million was spent in the overhaul.

In true Southern style, the home features beautiful porches and majestic oak trees offering ideal spots for sipping some sweet tea.

Classic features such as stunning hardwoods, high ceilings, gorgeous chandeliers and hand-carved fireplace mantels are mixed with modern appointments such as new appliances in the updated chef’s kitchen and high-end fixtures in the bathrooms.

Although no filming actually took place on the grounds of this Georgia stunner, Covington, Georgia is actually known as the Hollywood of the South, Over 125 movies and TV shows have been filmed there. Operating as a Bed & Breakfast for nearly six years with all operating permits in place, this beautiful estate home offers the option to be income producing. It was voted Top 10 Inns in the US and Southern Living’s Best of the South in 2018. As an event venue, it won Best of the Knot and the Wedding Wire Couples Choice Award. There is also a third permit in place as a historic site to offer tours.
